RANCO SQUARE COMPETITION

Ranco square competition

Competition project. redevelopment and enhancement of the square and surrounding areas in the municipality of Ranco 2013

Design team: Arch.Angelo Marelli, Arch. C. Escobar, Arch. R. Gamba, Arch. M.C. Collini

Goals and elements

The project defines a path conformed by a series of urban furniture elements, aimed to upgrade and rationalise the community public space.

This path conveys a qualifying character, boosting aspects of elegance, floral and natural exuberance that recall those Renaissance villas in the lakes of Lombardy, showing superb and harmonic conjugations of gardens, greenery and architecture.

Every part of the intervention is enriched and enhanced by plantings and flower grafts that personalise and give a clear identity to the public space. There are potted shrubs (evergreen vessels), climbing hedges (flowery wall), racks of plants (edible arbor), borders and new tree plantings (spontaneous grass) and finally an area dedicated to roses (rose garden).

The idea is developed through the construction of a series of masonry walls that define the area of intervention and also constitute the track set from the bottom of the Parish square, that rises in three different levels.

The paved sidewalk, built on the Parish square , in front of the churchyard and the new staircase, marks the basic level of the entire operation.

The access ramp at the center of the intervention area, connects the alternative walking route to the main road and the Castello street .

The courtyard around the old Town Hall is reordered, and evolves into a harmonic space to support the activities that take place within the building.

The area at the last and highest level, between gardens and small private buildings, is enhanced and integrated with the underlying public spaces and allows a direct connection to the manufacturing building, that is intended to serve the community
